I am Spartacus!

Dear Followers and Subscribers,
“I am Spartacus!”
(famous quote of the movie “Spartacus” directed by Stanley Kubrick)
There is a nice little optional rule for "Spartacus" in „History of the Ancients Seas“.
How does it work?
When playing Mare Nostrum, the opponents of Rome may activate Spartacus by choosing an “Attack” action. Spartacus is then placed in one of the following provinces: Samnium, Etruria, Lucania or Apulia. He is placed in a hexagon that contains a merchandise symbol. If there is a trading post, it becomes contested and doesn’t generate income. Spartacus can destroy a trading post by an “Attack” action. Spartacus can be moved by each opponent of Rome by choosing a “Move” action.
Having a slave revolt in Italy can be pretty annoying for the Roman player. He needs to put some energy in chasing the Army of Spartacus and keep it at bay.
The “Spartacus” rule offers a nice tactical challenge to the players. The number of actions for each player is limited and it can be a tough choice to decide how to use them. Players need to decide, weather to spend their available actions for the execution of their own development or to create a problem for the Roman player who in turn can’t ignore having Spartacus in his backyard. While play testing the game, this rule was our most fun optional rule.
Take care and see you in the next update,

"Archimedes" Solo Mode now included with all pledges + update to stretch goals!

Hi fellow board gamers,
the last days we did some evaluation of our stretch goals and the latest quotes we got from our manufacturing partner(s) and we have some great news for you all. We understand that solitiare / solo playing is really important to many board gamers, us here at Sound of Drums included, so we just decided to include the former "Archimedes" solitaire mode stretch goal to all games as a standard component!
Since "Archimedes" includes play cards and we have some layout space left on the diecut sheets, we thought why waste that? So the extra "Cost" and "Stability" play aid cards are also "unlocked" now and a standard component to all games.
Additionally we adjusted the levels for reaching the stretch goals by a lot. So while I write this the next two stretch goals are very well in reach. Check out the new stretch goal order and levels!
We think that's some great news for a sunday, not? Now set sails and conquer the rest of the stretch goals!
Take care and see you in the next update,
Your Sound of Drums team!

Alternative Victory Conditions
– Thu, Sep 22, 2022 at 11:40:20 PM
Dear backers and followers of our campaign!
Thank you so much for joining this exciting journey of “History of the Ancients Seas” on KS!
We are very close to unlock the stretch goal “Alternative Victory Conditions”. Today we would like to talk about these. To win a regular game in HOTAS players need to gain 10 Victory Points (VPs). Respectively 8 VPs in the short and 9 VPs in the medium playtime version of the rules.
As there are different ways of how to collect these Victory Points, players will follow different paths to win the game which leads automatically to asymmetrical game play. During the game the current level of Victory Points of each faction is visible for all players!
With the alternative victory conditions, we add a very nice alternative to how to win the game. In each game every faction has three different “Victory Conditions Cards”. At the beginning of the game, each player draws one card and keeps it secret.
The VPs you earn for fullfilling the goalds on your card represent between 6 to 8 VPs. This shortens the playing time and adds the possible surprise of “Sudden Victory”. It also offers very nice possibilities for feign strategies. Building monuments early in the game for example might mean that a player needs monuments for achieving victory. His opponents might invest some energy to destroy these.
While they spend “actions” to execute this, the previously mentioned player may head in a complete opposite direction to reach his “true” victory conditions. Let yourself be surprised :) !
